We built Safe & Informed to respect your privacy. This policy explains exactly what we do — and don't — collect, in the app, on this website, and in the community directory.
The app needs no account. Your feeds, reading history, and settings live on your device. We don't track you and we don't sell your data. A few features send data to processors to work (advertising on the free tier, AI audio, iCloud sync) — always minimised, and explained below.
Safe & Informed does not require a name, email, or account. The following stays on your device and is not transmitted to us:
If you use more than one device, the app can sync your feeds, queue, history, and archive across them through your own private Apple iCloud account (CloudKit). This data is stored in your iCloud space, governed by Apple's privacy policy. We do not operate this storage and cannot read your synced data. If you don't want sync, don't sign in to iCloud.
When you use an AI feature, the relevant article text is sent to be processed into a summary, spoken audio, or answer. To keep our API keys off your device, these requests pass through our own secure proxy (hosted on Cloudflare) and are forwarded to OpenAI and/or Google (Gemini). The request contains only the article content needed to produce the result — no account, name, or personal identifiers. We do not store the article text or the results on our servers; generated audio is cached locally on your device. Requests are gated by Apple App Attest so only the genuine app can use the proxy.
The free version shows ads via Google AdMob. By default we request non-personalized (contextual) ads. In the EU/EEA/UK we show a Google-certified consent form (UMP), and on iOS we ask for tracking permission via App Tracking Transparency (ATT). Personalized ads and use of the advertising identifier (IDFA/GAID) happen only if you consent. If you decline, only non-personalized ads are shown. The Pro and No Ads versions contain no advertising. Google's data handling is subject to Google's own policies.
The app may offer an opt-in, off-by-default analytics option. If (and only if) you turn it on, the app sends anonymous, aggregated usage trends (e.g. which features are used, popular topics by country) with no account, no device identifier, no IP, and no precise location. It is never used to identify you, and you can turn it off at any time. It is not enabled for anyone who hasn't opted in.
To show local weather in your briefing, the app may use your device location in the moment to fetch conditions (via our Cloudflare proxy to a weather provider). Location is used only at that moment and is not stored on our servers.
If you enable breaking-news notifications, Apple's Push Notification Service (APNs) delivers them using a device token. We do not store or share device tokens.
The app fetches feeds directly from the publishers you subscribe to. Those publishers may log standard server data (IP, timestamp) as normal web operation — this is outside our control.
Browsing the site and the RSS directory requires no account. We use no analytics or advertising cookies on the website — see our Cookie Policy.
These forms are anonymous. You may include a publication name, feed URL, recommended categories, language, and an optional note — please don't include personal information. To prevent abuse, our server temporarily counts requests per IP address in short-lived counters; your IP is used only for that rate-limiting and is not stored with your submission or used to identify you.
Each operates under its own privacy policy.
Safe & Informed is not directed at children under 13, and the optional analytics is never collected from minors. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
You can: use the app fully without an account; upgrade to remove ads; decline tracking (ATT) and personalized ads (UMP); leave analytics off; and avoid iCloud sync by not signing in. To request removal of a feed from the directory, contact us.
Material changes are reflected by updating the date above. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
